"Enjoying Nature"...inspired by Ana Mendieta |
Spectacle, defined by google, is an event or scene regarded in terms of its visual impact. Gran Fury used their art regarding AIDS as the spectacle, that is to show the public and inform them of how it was actually spread at the time. At the time, people felt the gay society was the reason for spreading aids when in reality no one had an idea about it. Through their art, Gran Fury raised awareness through images, one of which was my favorite, "Kissing doesn't Kill: Greed and Indifference do." Many people now go about what the images demonstrate, thinking that that is the reality. And so they choose their own image and identify one self by going about those images.
Ana Mendieta used nature and the female body as the spectacle. She used her actual body to mark places in nature and combine them together as one. A woman's body is naturally beautiful. We should be able to nurture it and feel great about it. We should not be ashamed on it. But based on the media such as Instagram and Facebook, the images of women with six pack abs and a big butt is the spectacle showing the public and telling them "this is how you should look" or "this is beauty."
My selfie involved me in the state of nature. I love nature, and in order to take this selfie I had to climb a mountain with my family. This shows me in my natural state being a part of nature at the top of the mountain. My spectacle would impact the public in a positive way by motivating other people to do social activities that would be productive to one self. It was a place where I had peace in my state of mind.
