Inspired By: Ana Mendieta
Ana Mendieta and her works had one goal, to make people uncomfortable , uncomfortable in the boxes that society has placed them in. A box that dictates and polices women bodies. A box that doesn't allow women any control of how they represent themselves. Ana Mendieta aimed to change that, she took and drew images and made sculptures of the female body in its most vulnerable of positions, she also portrayed these bodies, in nature , which she considers to be our maternal source, the womb in which we all came from. Ana Mendieta's works centralized on feminism, violence, life and death, and the beauty in the discomfort of each. She is completely different in comparison to other minimalistic artists of her time. Especially , Andy Warhol, who's work though similar in the form of placing something in the public spectacle for public consumption, was different in that he was advertising a culture and a lifestyle, whereas Ana Mendieta was embracing her culture and body & livelihood and sending a positive enforcing & reaffirming message to her consumers.
