Once I see an image of a muscle man, it makes me feel
like I should become muscle because society is showing this as a command
thing. I can define my identity around
that time as weak because I was not happy with the image I would see in the
mirror. According to the book, “Ways of
Seeing” by John Berger, he quotes on how “the way we see things is affected by
the way know and what we believe (8)”.
For example, in high school is know that everyone should have a certain
image or else no one will like you. This
affect my self-image because I was not looking nothing like the man in social
media. Social media men are so muscular
which made me feel sad on my looks. I
was skinny and did not have muscle at all which made me a target for all my
males’ classrooms to keep on me. I did
not want to believe the fact that I needed to gain some muscle but the bullying
could not stop. I started to go to the
gym because of what society think is right for young man to do. As in today I am till not happy with my look
because I do not match the body on how social media want men to be.
Inspired by Gran Fury |
We learn about identity and culture
through images because it gives people an idea of what is happening in
society. For example, Gran Fury saw how
images of interracial and heterosexual kissing was a problem to put in the
public. His images were to make people
aware on what people are thinking about a certain disease that is not
true. People till this day do not want
to be near someone with HIV or AIDS because they are scared to get it. Gran Fury was to inform people the truth
about this disease and kill all the stereotypes of what people are saying. This selfie remind me of what people wanted me to feel scared of being gay. Gran Fury want the LBGT community to be treated equal and to be themselves. This selfie was a symbol of how scared I was knowing I was gay. Gran Fury made a difference in many life and still this day the LGBT communities are more aware and continue to learn more about HIV.
Art and media teach us about ourselves to understand what we identify
out life as. My weekly selfie inspired
me to know more about gay right and how history did certain things that made
the LGBT community an outsider. In the
book, “The Art of Self Invention” by Joanne Finkelstein, she put a quote “One
has to life a life at an angle. To be oneself and at the same time
another. Nothing absolutely nothing is
as it seems (121)”. My close friends
know my true identity of being part of the LGBT community. I am willing to them that because our young
society are more likely to accepting and open minded. Sometimes I want to open up to my parents
about being gay but I cannot. My parent
do not accept heterosexual people being in a relationship because it is
wrong. School is not a place for
everyone to know your true identity because the main focus is to learn rather
than make friends. Everyone has a
certain part to know about you because you are the only one who knows about you
rather than others.
Inspired by Frida Kahlo |
Frida
Kahlo showed her pain by her art. I
could not believe she would draw about her back problem. It look like metal was her spinal cord which
made it more creepy because all we see inside in metal. Nail were all over her body just killing her slowly. Tears were falling a little from her eye because
she is sad of her life. I found it sad
how she was unable to have a baby but she could not let certain events hurt
her. All her pain was created into art
and that is what I am shocked. I think
people took her more serious because she has a wonderful talent. According to John Berger, “Men look at
woman. Woman watch themselves being
looked at”. Men would not want Kahlo
sexual because she was not a pretty lady.
She was not well dress and did not do her eyebrows like all beautiful
woman would do. In society woman are the
one who need to have small waist but big butt and boobs. This is affecting woman because every man
will not look at a woman because of her talent but of her body. Men would survey on a woman before treating
them.
Inspired by the Guerrilla Girls |
Guerrilla Girls were a group of woman hidden
with a mask to take about how woman should be treated the same because it is
not right if table were flipped around.
I would feel weird if a woman would try to judge me first by my appearance
because of my looks. Man are already
have that power but once we know how others feel than it is not a wonderful
feeling. The Guerrilla Girls still “believe
in an intersectional feminism that fights discrimination and supports human
rights for all people and all genders”. This was a selfie I chose with a ex boyfriend of mind because people would not like to see two men getting close. This was an example on how society want gay man to be inside the closet. We have certain right to hug who ever we want. It is not right for female to hug and dance together without other saying anything. That is why I chose this selfie to show man hugging in public without caring what others got to say.
